Community Grants Program (CG) – FY2019-2020 – First Quarter
A quarterly program for non-profit organizations developing small to medium scale community-based cultural programs, projects and events, such as fairs, parades, neighborhood festivals, conferences and publications.
Due to Hurricane Dorian’s approach, the Application Deadline for the Community Grants Program’s Fiscal Year 2019 – 2020 Second Quarter has been extended from the initial deadline of Thursday, September 5, 2019 at 11:59 PM to the new Application Deadline of Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at 11:59 PM. The Courtesy Review Deadline for returning applicants seeking a full comment and correction review expired Thursday, August 29, 2019 at 11:59 PM and will not be extended.

On Thursday, May 23 at 9:00 am, the City of Miami Commission will act on the veto issued by City of Miami Mayor Francis Suarez that stops the County-FIU plan for reviving the Coconut Grove Playhouse. It takes 4 of the 5 City of Miami Commissioners to override City of Miami Mayor Suarez’s veto.
Mayor Carlos Gimenez issued a statement regarding the City of Miami Mayor’s veto of the City Commission’s action in support of the County-FIU Coconut Grove Playhouse project. Mayor Gimenez stated,
On Wednesday, May 8, 2019 the City of Miami Commission approved the County’s appeal of the City’s Historic and Environmental Preservation Board (HEPB) rejection of the County-FIU plans for the Coconut Grove Playhouse by a 3 to 2 vote. This is a pivotal approval for the County’s work to bring great theater back to Coconut Grove.

Please join us at the City of Miami Commission’s Special Meeting for the Coconut Grove Playhouse this Wednesday, May 8th. This meeting is being held specifically to focus on the Playhouse decision.
The City of Miami Commission voted on Thursday, April 25th to defer the public hearing to make the final decision on the County-FIU Coconut Grove Playhouse project. The Commission scheduled a special meeting both to hear public input and to decide on the appeal by County to move forward with the Coconut Grove Playhouse. The Playhouse decision will be the only item for this meeting at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, May 8th at the Miami City Hall.
First and foremost, the County and FIU team will be present at this Thursday’s hearing before the City of Miami Commission to gain the final approval needed to move the Coconut Grove Playhouse project forward. We continue to encourage you to join us there!
Join us next week at the City of Miami Commission’s final hearing on Thursday, April 25th and support the County-FIU Playhouse plan! We are appealing to the unfair and unfortunate action of the City of Miami’s Historic and Environmental Preservation Board which denied the County’s application to move forward with plans to revitalize the Coconut Grove Playhouse.
There Is No Other Plan.
At its April 25, 2019 meeting (beginning at 2 pm), the City of Miami Commission is scheduled to hear the County’s appeal of the Historic and Environmental Preservation Board’s recent, unmerited vote to disapprove the County’s Playhouse application. City of Miami Commission will have the choice of approving the County’s thoroughly developed plans or deciding that nothing will happen, and the site will ultimately return to state control.
